Backup for VMware

Backup for VMware

Our high performance solution combines innovative VMware infrastructure protection, "D2D2T" (disk-to-disk-to tape) backup with powerful, integrated anti-virus and encryption tools, making it one of the most secure and manageable "out-of-the-box" backup solutions in the market. This solution also offers a host of functionality that provides organizations with greater control, higher operational efficiency, improved protection and overall cost savings. It is a solution that delivers reliable "enterprise-class" data protection for a wide range of operating environments.

This solution supports backup of VMware via VCB which minimizes or eliminates the potential for a performance bottleneck on the physical server, while providing granular restore capabilities. With our solution for VMware VCB backup, the backup administrator does not need to be a VMware expert to take advantage of the VCB backup functionality. The Agent for VMware provides automatic discovery of the Virtual Machines (VM) from the VC/ESX server. The VCB backup is totally integrated in the same console as all the other backup operations and the same policies for regular backups can be applied to the VCB backups as well. File restores can be performed transparently back to the original location of the file - there is no need to restore a file and then “copy” it back to the VM. Customers can perform image level restore for recovering virtual machines or file level restores for recovering individual files. Customers also have complete flexibility to manage backups at multiple levels; the VCB Proxy, the ESX Server / Virtual Center, the Virtual Machine and the Volumes.

In addition, with the built-in anti-virus scanner, any VMware systems getting backed up are automatically scanned for viruses, even if the virtual machines are not online. In addition, using VCB, the virus scanning is performed on the backup servers, and not the ESX, thus reducing any impact on production server performance.

Physical to Virtual Bare-Metal Restore is also supported. This enables a backup of a physical server to be restored to a virtual VMware guest server regardless of the physical hardware. Customers can now leverage their VMware investments to get their servers and applications online faster, in case of physical server failure.

The traditional method of deploying agents on the virtual guest operating system is also supported. Individual file level granular control is available as well as Application Aware backup to support the database level and granular backup of Microsoft Exchange, SQL, etc.

Customers can perform zero production server impact backups, as the backups can be performed from the replicated data as if the data came from the production server. Backup jobs off replicated data are scheduled and configured completely through the backup management system interface allowing the full power of a mature backup solution without the customization typically required when backing up replicated data. Since our solution is aware of the original source of the data, the administrator has a choice to restore directly to the original server or restore to the replica server.

This integrated solution also enables companies to consolidate their data in remote office/branch office (ROBO) locations back into their central data center and manage it under their corporate data protection policies and procedures. Using the WAN optimized real-time replication technology data can be efficiently consolidated to the datacenter or central office where the backup module steps in to backup the data in a secure and properly managed environment. This eliminates the need for tapes at the ROBO locations and associated risks with lost or stolen tapes. It also eliminates the need for any IT staff focusing on backups in the ROBO locations thereby saving time and money for our customers.

This solution enables a new approach to disaster recovery and high availability that reduces complexity, provides greater application availability and reduces the total cost of ownership.
